Agatha Christie Mile - Torquay Harbour

Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie spent much of her life in the area. She played there as a child, worked and socialised there as a young lady and gathered ideas that were to come to life in her best selling books with immortal characters such as Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.

The Queen of crime - Agatha Christie

The Agatha Christie Mile takes in 10 landmarks - all dotted around the Torquay harbour and seafront area. The walk starts at Torquay's tourism information centre on the harbourside, where you can pick up the Agatha Christie Mile leaflet.

That takes you through the landmarks....and at eight of them, there are clues which spell out the name of a character linked with Dame Agatha's books.

Torbay Steam Fair 2009 31 July - 2 August

Torbay Steam Fair 31 July - 2 August

Torbay Steam Fair 31 July - 2 August

Location: Near to Churston Village, just off the Dartmouth/Brixham Road.

Dates: 31 July and the 1 & 2 August 2009.

As the number of entries are rising year upon year, we have had to take the decision to add another field to the Show Site. This will allow us a lot more scope for the Working demonstrations and the Heavy Haulage section.

Boxing and Wrestling. One of the major attractions at this years show, especially for the lovers of the old time fairgrounds, will be the late Ron Taylor’s “Excelsior” Boxing and Wrestling Booth. This famous fairground attraction is the last of it’s kind still travelling, although only making special appearances. The Booth was founded in 1861 by Rons Great Grandfather and has appeared regularly at all the big fairs including Nottingham Goose Fair.

Steam Ploughing. For the first time, we will be having Steam ploughing demonstrations. This is a demonstration that we have wanted to have at the Fair for a number of years but lack of space has been a problem. With the addition of the extra field we will be able to have a vintage crop cutting demo, followed by the Steam Ploughs. The corn will then be taken to the threshing drum for the next demo.

We already have a number of new Steam exhibits booked in for this years show, details of which will be published later.

Hi-Flyer Torquay balloon

  Hi-Flyer balloon, Torquay

The balloon ascends to 400ft

Location: Torquay seafront - all summer, weather permitting.

The Mayor of Torbay has reacted with delight at news that the new hiFlyer balloon for Torquay's seafront has been given the green light.

The announcement follows successful negotiations with the Cary Estate Trustees, covenant guardians for the land on which the balloon is to be positioned, and the signing of a lease with Lindstrand AeroPlatforms Ltd who will supply and operate the attraction.

Now it is full steam ahead for the balloon which when installed will allow residents and visitors, young and older to fly silently to approximately 400 feet and enjoy the views across Torbay.

The balloon, which is non-polluting, environmentally friendly, quiet and safe will then be delivered to site. 6,200 cubic metres of helium will then be pumped into the balloon when it is inflated on site, which in itself is a fascinating sight.

Alastair Gunning, Director of Lindstrand AeroPlatforms Ltd said:  "We are pleased to be part of the regeneration programme for Torbay.  Throughout history people have longed to fly and see the world from above.  Now the HiFlyer brings this silent, environmentally friendly, accessible experience to Torbay so that many people can enjoy the thrill of a balloon flight over a spectacular Bay."

The balloon will be able to carry up to 30 people, 4 times an hour, at anyone time, however, this figure decreases depending on wind speeds and air temperature.
